Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Welcome to our website! We are committed to providing you with the best chiropractic care possible in a professional and pleasant environment. Below are answers to many of the questions people ask about the care offered in our office, insurance and other payment methods, and what to expect from your treatment program.
Will you take my insurance?
All major insurance plans including PPOs, HMOs and Medicare cover chiropractic to a greater or lesser degree. We accept most insurance plans except for Medicaid or GHI. We will also file your insurance paperwork for you.
For those patients who do not have insurance that pays for chiropractic, we keep our fees reasonable and try to work within your budget. We have discount programs and monthly payment programs. Our front desk staff will be happy to discuss all methods of payment with you.
What exactly are Chiropractic and Applied Kinesiology?
Chiropractic is a natural, hands-on science that relieves pressure on the nerves. It corrects misalignments of the spine and the aches and pains that can result from these misalignments. Chiropractic has been used as a valid therapy for over 100 years. Many athletes and celebrities use chiropractic as their treatment of choice, because it is drug-free and allows them to be back in action in a relatively short period of time after an injury.
Applied Kinesiology is a branch of chiropractic diagnostic and treatment technique. It addresses muscle spasms, muscle imbalances and trigger points (sensitive areas of the body which when stimulated elicit reactions and pain elsewhere in the body).
Why do I have pain?
During your initial examination Dr. Lefkowitz will diagnose your condition and its origin. He will explain to you why you have pain and what treatment plan is necessary to restore your body to a healthy and pain-free condition.
What if I just started feeling pain recently?
Your pain may be due to a recent injury or may be the result of a long-standing condition that has finally become acute. In either case, the doctor will diagnose and explain the problem and its treatment to you.
Do I need x-rays or other tests?
The conditions of the joints and muscles that Dr. Lefkowitz looks for in his examinations do not generally show up on x-rays. Neither do the general sensations of fatigue and ill health. These problems require a detailed, specialized, hands-on examination and an evaluation by interview. If Dr. Lefkowitz believes that there is a bone problem that requires an x-ray or an MRI, he will order one. If you have had a trauma or an accident, the doctor will send you for appropriate testing immediately.
Does Dr. Lefkowitz prescribe pain medication?
Chiropractic, Applied Kinesiology, Physical Therapy, Trigger Point Therapy and Nutrition are sciences based on the natural treatment of conditions that exist in the body. Pain medication does not address the causes of pain, injury or physical problems but rather, addresses the brain and nervous system so one does not feel the pain. Conditions can continue to get worse while you are taking pain medication. Natural treatment with Dr. Lefkowitz can correct your condition and allow you to live healthy and pain-free without the need for medication. In most situations, the patient will know when he no longer needs painkillers. Dr. Lefkowitz will discuss with you any pain medication you are currently using.
What happens on my first visit?
At your first visit, you will receive an examination, consultation and your first treatment. The doctor will discuss with you his findings and the treatment necessary for your recovery.
How will Dr. Lefkowitz treat me?
Dr. Lefkowitz will use hands-on techniques to treat your condition. He will use chiropractic, physical therapy, Applied Kinesiology, Trigger Point therapy, ultrasound, heat, massage, nutrition and specific exercises, according to your need. He will treat you until you are well and then will discuss with you a follow-up wellness program.
How long will I need treatment?
This depends on the severity of your problem, and the doctor will discuss his findings with you during your first visit. If your case is accepted in our office, it is because the doctor feels he can treat your condition successfully. Every condition requires its own individual treatment and has its own healing time. Be patient, and give your condition time to recover. Unless you had a recent accident, your condition took several months or years to develop and will take some time to get well. After your initial course of treatment is over, we will discuss with you a wellness program to keep your condition from recurring and to help you maintain an active lifestyle.
Can Chiropractic help my child?
In most cases, children of all ages are very responsive to treatment that addresses their problems. Having a skeleton and joints without misalignments, nerves that have no interference and muscles free of injury or spasms, works wonders in restoring a child’s health and temperament. Additionally, addressing these areas with Applied Kinesiology and nutrition brings about many positive changes. Recent scientific studies have shown that chiropractic is also effective in treating pediatric conditions such as ear infections, chronic sore throats, allergies and sinus problems.
The best way to know whether your child can be helped is to bring your child in for an evaluation. Dr. Lefkowitz is well known for his successful treatment of children and infants. Children can play in our play area while waiting to be seen by the doctor.
What conditions can Chiropractic treat?
Most people are aware that chiropractic is effective for lower back pain, herniated discs, sciatica, neck pain, whiplash, arm pain and headaches. All major insurance companies cover chiropractic care because they know it is effective. Less well known are the successes in treating other areas of the body, such as joint problems or muscle pain. These problems can occur in the back, neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees and wrists (carpal tunnel). Scientific studies have shown that chiropractic is effective in treating painful conditions of the body that normally will not resolve with other forms of treatment.
Besides pain relief, other benefits of chiropractic care include increased energy, deeper breathing, increased flexibility, better sleep, a general relaxed feeling in the muscles and improved posture.
In our office, exercise plays an important part in your recovery. It is so important that we have made a DVD that we distribute to our patients. The DVD contains a more detailed explanation and the demonstration of the exercises that we would like you to perform at home. In addition to these spinal exercises, we recommend that everyone does aerobic exercise three times a week, if you are able. During your office visit, the doctor will discuss the exact exercises that will be helpful for your condition.
Dr. Lefkowitz is a Certified Clinical Nutritionist and a Diplomate of the American Clinical Board of Nutrition. If you have any questions about diet and supplements, he can answer them for you and give you a program based on a nutritional evaluation.
